In the Alpes de Haute-Provence, 70 mountain guides organise- depending on the established program or on demand- hikes, mountain-bike hikes, snowshoe hikes. These professionals, with a State Diploma, are exceptional guides. With them, you’ll discover fauna and flora, but also all the history of our land. On preserved tracks, they’ll take you on original and authentic adventures: naturalist hikes at dawn in the Pays Dignois, bivouac in a yurt in Ubaye, orienteering race for children and parents in the Pays de Forcalquier...

The Gîtes de France welcomes you in a quiet environment, far from the noisy big cities. Far from the roads, at the entrance of a pine forest or on the banks of a river, this is the perfect occasion for you to be alone with the world, with cicadas singing or the whispers of a stream as the only background music. And when the night falls, under a starry sky, you’ll listen to...silence. Reading, watching a bee forage an orchid, share a meal under the shade of a plane are daily pleasures here. But you also have to discover our secret and different heritage: Romanesque churches, half-ruined hillside castles, delicate oratories... From villages to villages, markets propose products of the land with their unique taste whereas the remarkable ‘’sites of taste’’ are associated to labelled productions: Banon cheese, Lurs oil, Valensole lavender, plant-drinks in Forcalquier.
Several roads allow you to discover Haute-Provence on a thematic basis: road of the lavender, Road Napoleon, road of the Great Alps... While parks and gardens offer a shady halt to the summer wanderer : Garden of the Cordeliers in Digne-les-Bains, gardens of the Priory of Salagon in Mane, the Rose garden Valsaintes abbey in Simiane-la-Rotonde...
With an extraordinary sunlight- more than 300 days a year-, a fresh air and outstanding landscapes, our department is the perfect place to practise open air sports.
Everywhere, water, air and earth seem to vibrate in unison at the heart of a preserved nature. Hiking can be practiced in all seasons, whether you’re trained or not. From the 2 hours-stroll in the hills to the several days long trekking in the mountains, everyone –no matter the age- can take his backpack and go safe on hundreds of km of signposted trails. Many mountain-bike and cycling tracks, or horse-riding trails are also signposted. Water provides various pleasures: rafting, canyoning in the Ubaye and the Verdon, sailing and windsurfing on the lakes of Serre-Ponçon and Sainte-Croix du Verdon, bathing in the artificial lakes and in the numerous bathing lakes. Finally, our department is one of the few where stream fishing still can be miraculous, and where the stroller can see a Brown Trour shine in the river.
In the winter, water hides and snow covers the mountains. Alpine ski, cross-country ski, Nordic trails, snowboard, snowshoes, sled dog strolls, all offer a remarkable range of activities in vast ski resorts, close to nature.
Mid-seasons are perfect to practise glider (Vaumeilh, Saint Auban) and free gliding (Saint-André-les-Alpes, Saint-Vincent-les-Forts...) and for a few hours, feel free as a bird !
