The Durance and the Bléone are two rivers crossing the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Manosque, Sisteron and Digne-les-Bains contribute to make these two valleys the main basin of population, economic and tourist activities of the department.
Between Luberon and Contadour, the Pays de Forcalquier and the Montagne de Lure, witnesses of a pastoral life still important nowadays. The rural architecture of the villages, farms, sheepfolds is one of the many jewels of this territory.
The Pays Dignois is characterised by a vast diversity of landscapes and its exceptional climate. It’s a changing rural territory, organised around its main city, Digne-les-Bains.
First gate of the Alps, the Pays Dignois gathers many middle-mountain summits, which sometimes share the characteristics of high Alpine summits. The Prealpine mountains in this area sees its altitude growing from 500m in the South-West up to the Massif de l’Estrop and its 2961m on the North-West.
300 million years of history can be seen in the vast natural spaces of the Pays Dignois. This geologic paradise led to the creation of the Réserve Géologique de Haute-Provence in 1984. This natural reservation, Europe’s largest, includes 59 townships (52 in the Alpes de Haute-Provence and 7 in the Var) and represent a surface of 2300 km².
