Inaugurated in 1937, the Road of the Great Alps is the most beautiful mountain itinerary: from Thonon-les-Bains to Menton, from the Léman to the Meditarranean Sea, 684 km and 16 passes among the highest in France (6 are more than 2000m-high) where you'll meet cars, motorcycles, bikes and even sometimes brave hikers !
Crossing 6 Alpine departments (Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Isère – with some itineraries – Hautes-Alpes, Alpes de Haute-Provence, Alpes Maritimes), it can be done in its entirety from June to October or only sections before snow on the highest passes is cleaned-off. The Road of the Great Alps is an open space where everybody chose the speed and the journey wanted, depending on the vehicle and the curiosity.
In the Alpes de Haute-Provence, it goes through a territory with a rich natural and cultural heritage, from Barcelonnette in the Ubaye, breathtaking sections of the Col de Vars (2111m) and Col de la Cayolle (2352m), going along the Parc National du Mercantour with an alternative road at the Col de la Bonette (2715m) the highest road in Europe.
A stay in a Gîte de France, here's a gift idea which is quite uncommon and that will certainly make the beneficiary more than happy !
