Since 1999, following CAIRN’s idea, Goldsworthy realised 13 creations throughout the years in the Pays Dignois. They’re linked by a 150 km pedestrian itinerary ‘’the art tracks’’, which can be made in approximately 10 days. They can also be discovered via short strolls. Nine ancient buildings, renovated with the local history in mind, host an original work of the artist. These are the ‘’Art Refuges’’. Some of them are also gîtes for hikers. Three large cairns known as the Sentinels signpost the trail. In Digne’s museum, an ‘’earth river’’ marks the beginning of the itinerary.
Thus, thePays Dignois became a sanctuary for artistic sites mixing heritage, landscape and contemporary art. Hiking for art is a completely new offer. Works are also reachableby car or by short strolls.
To visit or use the refuges, you have to book or ask for the key at the Gassendi museum in Digne-les-Bains.
A mountain guide, Jean-Pierre Brovelli, can guide you through this artistic stroll. More info on his website. Most of the pictures illustrating Art Refuges were taken by him.
