The Durance and the Bléone are two rivers crossing the Alpes de Haute-Provence. Manosque, Sisteron and Digne-les-Bains contribute to make these two valleys the main basin of population, economic and tourist activities of the department.
Between Luberon and Contadour, the Pays de Forcalquier and the Montagne de Lure, witnesses of a pastoral life still important nowadays. The rural architecture of the villages, farms, sheepfolds is one of the many jewels of this territory.
The Durance river crosses the Haute-Provence and makes this territory a land of transition between Mediterranean warmth and the rigorous mountains. With an average 450m height, the Val de Durance is an important crossroad; the A51 highway from Marseille to Gap, proposes either ski resorts or the sea only 1-hour away !
The long valley of the Middle-Durance, which goes from Sisteron towards the end of the Basse-Provence, in a puzzle of contrasts. It’s also the place where the two Provencal natural parks meet, Luberon and Verdon, and the Durance is the frontier in between.
