MORE ABOUT THIS 'VILLAGE DE CARACTERE'At an altitude of 700 metres, between fields of lavender and sweet-smelling garrigues, the charming village of Cruis is located in peaceful surroundings on the edge of the Montagne de Lure ash-forest.
In Roman times, a branch of the Domitian Way went through Cruis where, in XIth century, the abbey of Saint-Martin prospered and widened its influence. Next to this ecclesiastic prosperity, its fields of lavender and medicinal plants enabled it in times gone by to be an important town in the essential oil trade.
The village has kept its cachet and offers you a charming walk through its small flower-filled streets and its pretty squares. You will see beautiful houses with old stone facades and well-matched roofs. You can admire its church which is the pride of the village and has a magnificently restored XVIIth century altar-piece and 17 figurines graded Historical Monument. Don't miss its beautiful pyramid bell-tower with its multi-coloured tiles.
Winner of two flowers in the national competition of « Villes et Villages Fleuris », Cruis is graded a « Village et Cité de Caractère » and hosts the Departmental Music Festival at the end of June. |
